Sydney Roosters
will wake up on Sunday morning and know they were in a battle with the Super League champions, St Helens; but in the end this was a familiar outcome and a brutal lesson in the supreme quality possessed by the NRL’s standard-bearers. Trent Robinson’s side are the first team in World Club Challenge history to defend the title which is no meanfeat.
But how they were pushed every step of the way by St Helens after a performance in which they enjoyed the greater periods of pressure and possession but could not make their field position count. The Roosters absorbed a huge amount of pressure while leading 8-6 for the entirety of the third quarter and struck when it mattered. Joseph Manu’s second try shortly after the hour was a decisive moment that took the sting out of St Helens’ challenge. Before that they had spurned numerous gilt-edged opportunities to go back ahead, having earlier led thanks to an early Luke Thompson try, though the Roosters’ defence was of the highest quality. “For periods in both halves we were well on top, but our execution let us down,” conceded the St Helens coach, Kristian Woolf. “We created plenty of opportunities, we bombed a couple by not making the catch and in a big game like this against a good team you’ve got to make those plays.”decisive.
That was evident at both ends of the field – though how different several of the opportunities the Saints spurned might have been if some of their regular strike three-quarters such as Mark Percival and Regan Grace were not absent due to injuries. For the majority of the second half it was predominantly St Helens who were on top as they chased the points that would have put them ahead, but they could not make their superiority count. Much credit goes to the Roosters, though, who overturned that early Thompson try with scores from Manu and Daniel Tupou to lead 8-6 at half-time. Both were precise finishes, and of the highest quality. “I’m really proud of the club, to do what we’ve done,” Robinson said. “They’re a special group, but it was a toughgame.“
states.

So, I did get up early to watch the game. When I turned in again at 5 am I didn't feel too disappointed by my team's losing performance. I thought St Helens showed the closing gap between SL and NRL. That last forward pass which led to a Roosters try was a howler.Reply

A good game to watch. Saints were always a little less convincing when it came to threatening the try line. SL teams will always now need toughness (which Saints had) and some major luck to pull off a WCC win. Every pass will have to stick, and the Aussies will have to fumble plays uncharacteristically often. Incidentally, Lomax seems to be playing increasingly bravely. He seems to be taking the ball right up to the defensive line before passing.Reply

Roosters deserved the win but the pass for the initial break on their third and decisive try looked a mile forward. For inexplicable reasons the Sky team failed to even give it the usual “hint of a forward pass” bollocks, and then repeatedly showed the try from every other angle but the one that would confirm this or otherwise.Reply

As far as he Sky team are concerned, a pass has to travel about 5 metres forward before they will call it, otherwise it's just a bit'flat'.

Regarding the Sky team, was Bill Arthur ever announced as Eddie Hemmings long term successor? Along with Barrie and Terry the talk engine, the Sky commentary team last night felt 'second string' forsuch a big game.

Do we know whether Luke Thompson had any other NRL offers? I suspect there was a James Graham factor, but Canterbury seems like a bit of a middling option when he could walk into any of their sides.Reply

i have watched numerous games, since the controversy at the Catalans match. I have yet to see a 'rainbow flag', at any of these games, including the Castleford game. I would not dream of implying that the flag had been taken to France with the deliberate intention of provoking a response, I am simplymaking a comment.
There was an excellent game Saints vs Easts (yes I'm old) and thebetter team won.

Bludged a day off school in 1976 to watch Easts beat St Helens, it was on a Wednesday but a lot of people were having a sickie, it was a great moment then and it still is now, especially after winning two in a row. Can only hope we are back next year!Reply

God this is a tired line that gets trotted out every year. St Helens have played 3 games this season - it’s hardly mid-season. The English teams can’t win with some people - if the Aussie team wins easily it shows there’s no point in the game even happening, if the English team win or do well, it’s because we’re ‘mid-season’ & the Aussies would win easily if it was played at adifferent time.
Give it a rest eh?

It was like every England v Australia test match - the Poms equal or better through the middle but without the talent/class to get the points off the back of it. But this Roosters side is very, very good - they haven’t conceded 20 points in a game since May.Reply

So, I did get up early to watch the game. When I turned in again at 5 am I didn't feel too disappointed by my team's losing performance. A couple of niggling ideas of what might have been kept me awake for 10 minutes. Makinson's most unusual howlers, wayward passes from a couple of Saints youngsters, and sympathy with the crowd who called the forward pass before Keary's try (a feeling that almost became conspiracy theory when Sky didn't then show the pass from the original angle in the replays). Hardly gave the ref's possibly unbalanced policing of the ruck a second thought, though I bet a lot of Saints fans in the ground did. A team warning from Kendal in the last 5 minutes also seemed a bit silly to me, after the Roosters had got away with a number of flops and contentious holding down decisions throughout the game. Roosters were up on our halves so quick, that Lomax and Fages were pretty much snuffed out for much of the time, despite them both showing flashes of brilliance and playing very well, I thought. Roosters' ability to hold up and push back the Saints' attackers in the tackle was a model of coordinated action I don't think I've ever seen from any team before. Absolutely devastating. Saints learned the lesson and tried to emulate it and were actually winning many of the rucks for periods of the game, but the power and strength of those backs was something else altogether. In RL as in most sports (putting my Phil Clarke head on) speed and size will always overcome smaller, slower opponents even given parity in skill and execution, and you can't coach those qualities. Well played you Saints, there were some heroic efforts out there, and Alex Walmesley must be amongst the four best props in the world right now. JWH would agree I reckon.Reply

That's a good summary of the game. I was there and it was plain that SR saw Lomax as the threat and had a man on him so quickly every time that they must have been offside half the time. The refereeing was disappointing - uneven, critical forward passes not spotted (a longstanding blight on the game) although given against us which prevented a score, but I mustn't start ranting! Shame execution let us down - as has been remarked, Percy and Regan might have made a difference. The Roosters were very strong inthe tackle and their running always seemed to gain the extra metres after contact - their carriers ran from deep and had good momentum. A defeat, but I felt proud of the lads, they put up a great display and if that 20 mins of pressure in the third quarter had resulted in points, I think we could have won it.Reply

Top stuff. Not as close as the score suggested, but Saints really took it to them in the middle. Walmsley is a powerhouse. You can properly build a team around him. The difference was in taking opportunities. Saints played as if every opportunity was their last. No patience, too much panic, like it had to be now or never. That’s unlike them, which I can only put down to the pressure Souths put on them. That’s why I say it wasn’t as close as the score suggested - I got the feeling that Saints were on the ragged edge just staying close. Having said that, Saints did a far better job than my team last year. Here’s hoping that they can take all the positives from that performance and completely forget them.Reply

Just back from the game. Closer than I expected. Percival and Grace would’ve sorted that left edge out and Coote would’ve given the left foot kicking option. Saints were great in the middle, more than matched Easts but as ever the Aussie team soaks up the pressure then counter attacks.Reply

First consecutive premierships for 21 years. Brisbane won in 1997 & 1998. Don't write off the Super League win as Broncos beat ARL champs Newcastle 26-6 shortly after reunification.Reply
