LEAFS SIGN JAKE MUZZIN TO EXTENSION, BRING BACK CALLE ROSEN ON QUIET NHL TRADE DEADLINE DAY By Mark Zwolinski Sports Reporter Mon., Feb. 24, 2020_timer_2 min. read1
The Maple Leafs announced the signing of defenceman Jake Muzzin to a four-year, $22.5-million (U.S.) contract extension and made a minor trade on a mostly quiet NHL trade deadline day. Muzzin, who has provided a much needed physical presence on the blue line and veteran leadership in the dressing room, will carry an average annual value of $5.625 million on his new deal. According to reports, Muzzin was granted a no-movement clause for the 2020-21 season, followed by a no-trade clause for the following season and a 10-team, no-trade clause over the final two years of the deal. The Leafs also have the option of not protecting Muzzin in the expansion draft when Seattle joins the league next season. The 30-year-old Muzzin will be a core piece in a defensive group that has been criticized for two seasons now. He joins Morgan Rielly and youngsters Rasmus Sandin, Timothy Liljegren and Travis Dermott as pivotal defencemen for the future. Muzzin has 22 points in 52 games this season, and 38 in the 82 games he’s played since being traded from the Kings January 28, 2019. Earlier Monday, the Maple Leafs reacquired defenceman Calle Rosen in a trade that sent goalie Michael Hutchinson to the Colorado Avalanche. Rosen, 26, was originally signed on a two-year entry level contract in May 2017, but was sent to Colorado last July as part of the Nazem Kadri deal that brought Tyson Barrie and Alex Kerfoot to Toronto. The move brings added depth at defence for Toronto. YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN...LeafsOpinion

WHY HAVE THE LEAFS NOT TRADED ANDERSEN? KEVIN MCGRAN ANSWERED YOUR NHLTRADE DAY QUESTIONS
4 days ago
Rosen appeared in eight games for the Avalanche this season, registering two assists. The native of Vaxjo, Sweden, played in eight games over two seasons in Toronto prior to the trade and was part of the Marlies’ Calder Cup championship in 2018. The trade brings an end to Hutchinson’s time with the Leafs organization. The Barrie native was acquired Dec. 29, 2018 in a deal that sent a fifth-round pick in 2020 to the Florida Panthers. Hutchinson’s struggles in the backup role this season magnified the need for improvement there. After compiling a 4-9-1 record, with an .886 save percentage and a 3.66 GAA, he was placed on waivers to make room for goaltender Jack Campbell, who was acquired from the Kings in a deal that also brought Kyle Clifford to the Leafs. Also Monday:

Both remain a long way off from rejoining the team, but the fact they are back on the ice was a good sign. Mark Zwolinski is a sports reporter based in Toronto.
