JUST CONSTRUCTION
WATCH: Henry Harris + Kenya Lazuli. May 4, 2021. By Drew Vetere, Outreach and Development Coordinator . Henry Harris + Kenya Lazuli joined us on Wednesday, April 28th, for the second discussion in our 2021 Spring Speaker Series dedicated to Design/Build for SocialJustice.
THE ART OF STONE
We will meet Monday-Friday, 9am - 5pm at the client's property. This five-day intensive course will teach the art of building with natural stone and the intelligence and logic behind it. This course will focus on flatwork and sculptural elements, like archways. Class discussions will include the science behind an arch and engineering the woodenTIMBER FRAMING
This course will focus on traditional hand-cut joinery and tools and will also demonstrate some of the power tools used by modern timber framers. June 6-12, 2021 course: This session of the Timber Framing course will take place at Knoll Farm. Staying at Knoll Farm is a rareand special treat.
CARPENTRY FOR WOMEN
This course gives students a basic overview of general terms, tools, and techniques used in the field of carpentry. Learn how to safely use a wide range of hand and power tools in a supportive environment while building a small structure such as a shed or playhouse. We'll go over house framing and layout while looking at the anatomy of a structure. TINY HOUSE DESIGN/BUILD CERTIFICATE The final module focuses on exterior finishing. The 2021 Tiny House Design/Build Certificate will be an online/in-person hybrid. The schedule is as follows: Architectural Design (Online): Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:30 pm April 28 - May 26. Additional evening design sessions will be incorporated throughout the in-personcomponent.
INTRO TO COPPERSMITHING Intro to Coppersmithing. In this weekend workshop students will learn how to form a 12" disc of 18 gauge copper into a large decorative bowl. Using a torch students will anneal the copper disc making it malleable so that it can be formed into a carved out tree stump with a ball-peen hammer. After graduating, Britton stayed at Yale to teach advanced design and urban history. VARDO WAGON DESIGN/BUILD Explore different types of traditional and modern wagons and how they’re built. Take a tour of a modern vardo under construction, and work on your own vardo wagon design. Walk through the construction process including dimensions and proportions, aerodynamics and wind resistance with an emphasis on overall weight, and finishing details. CERTIFICATE IN RESIDENTIAL DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION The Fall 2021 Certificate in Residential Design and Construction will be an online/in-person hybrid. We will meet Monday-Friday, 9am - 5pm at the client's property. This five-day intensive course will teach the art of building with natural stone and the intelligence and logic behind it. This course will focus on flatwork and sculptural elements, like archways. Class discussions will include the science behind an arch and engineering the woodenTIMBER FRAMING
This course will focus on traditional hand-cut joinery and tools and will also demonstrate some of the power tools used by modern timber framers. June 6-12, 2021 course: This session of the Timber Framing course will take place at Knoll Farm. Staying at Knoll Farm is a rareand special treat.
CARPENTRY FOR WOMEN
This course gives students a basic overview of general terms, tools, and techniques used in the field of carpentry. Learn how to safely use a wide range of hand and power tools in a supportive environment while building a small structure such as a shed or playhouse. We'll go over house framing and layout while looking at the anatomy of a structure. INTRO TO COPPERSMITHING Intro to Coppersmithing. In this weekend workshop students will learn how to form a 12" disc of 18 gauge copper into a large decorative bowl. Using a torch students will anneal the copper disc making it malleable so that it can be formed into a carved out tree stump with a ball-peen hammer. Working in a spiraling pattern from the outside edgeBRITTON ROGERS
After graduating, Britton stayed at Yale to teach advanced design and urban history. In his practice today, Britton focuses on renovations and restorations, as well as designs for gardens and landscapes. Chris is a grower of WORK AND LEARN WITH YESTERMORROW Yestermorrow’s Internship Program is dedicated to providing a unique educational experience working and living as part of the Yestermorrow community. Interns learn a variety of skills by means of hands-on experience, and at the same time are able to take a variety of courses offered by talented faculty from all over the country. NATURAL BUILDING CERTIFICATE Our Natural Building Certificate is a unique course of study providing hands-on exploration of earthen and natural elements and the means by which they can be used to create high-performance structures and shelter. WOODWORKING CERTIFICATE The curriculum has a strong focus on the integration of design in the woodworking process, part of Yestermorrow's core philosophy of design/build. The Certificate begins with an analysis of trees and the wood they produce, an overview of felling and milling practices, and an introduction to the tactile essence of working with green wood. CERTIFICATE IN RESIDENTIAL DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION The Fall 2021 Certificate in Residential Design and Construction will be an online/in-person hybrid. The schedule is as follows: Architectural Design (Online): Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm July 20 - August 17. There will be weekly homework assignments to further your learning. Additional evening design sessions will be incorporatedthroughout
VARDO WAGON DESIGN/BUILD Explore different types of traditional and modern wagons and how they’re built. Take a tour of a modern vardo under construction, and work on your own vardo wagon design. Walk through the construction process including dimensions and proportions, aerodynamics and wind resistance with an emphasis on overall weight, and finishing details. TINY HOUSE DESIGN/BUILD CERTIFICATE The final module focuses on exterior finishing. The 2021 Tiny House Design/Build Certificate will be an online/in-person hybrid. The schedule is as follows: Architectural Design (Online): Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:30 pm April 28 - May 26. Additional evening design sessions will be incorporated throughout the in-personcomponent.

Semester Program. Translate theory into practice, designing and building an architecturally innovative, high-performance shelter. Started in 2011, the Design/Build Semester is an ongoing partnership between Yestermorrow Design/Build School (Waitsfield, VT) and UMass Amherst’s Department of PASSIVE HOUSE 8 DAY CONSULTANTS TRAINING PROGRAM After reading these materials, you may apply online. This is a Passive House Institute US training course being held at Yestermorrow's facilities. Tuition is $2100 for non-members and $1950 for PHAUS members.
